Transport: common questions
- Who issues a lorry receipt?
- The goods transport agency issues the LR (consignment note) to the consignor when it takes charge of goods. It carries the LR number, vehicle number, consignor and consignee, packages, weight and freight terms, and acts as the document of title.
- Is GST charged on transport receipts?
- GTA services attract GST at 5% under reverse charge (paid by the registered recipient) or 12% with input credit if the GTA opts for forward charge. State which applies on the receipt; check with your CA if unsure.
- What is the difference between a packing list and a dispatch note?
- A packing list describes the physical packages: numbers, dimensions, gross and net weight, contents. A dispatch note is a cover note for the shipment: order reference, what was sent, courier and tracking. Exports need the first; domestic couriers usually need the second.
