How is GST calculated?

GST = Amount × Rate ÷ 100. For a sale within the same state the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST. For a sale to another state the whole amount is charged as IGST.

How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?

Base = Inclusive ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). For ₹1,180 at 18%: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, so GST is ₹180.

What are the GST slabs in India?

0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% are the main slabs, with special rates of 0.25%, 1.5%, 3% and 6% for items like precious stones, gold and certain services.

Can I use this for invoices?

Yes. VyaparKit's GST invoice tool applies these calculations automatically to every line item, with HSN codes and amount in words.

About the gst calculator tool

GST calculation comes up dozens of times a day in an Indian business: quoting a price to a customer, checking a supplier's bill, deciding an MRP, or filling a tax invoice. Every taxable supply carries GST at a slab rate, and the tax is either split into CGST and SGST (same state) or charged as IGST (different state). The arithmetic is simple, but the split and the rounding trip people up when they are in a hurry.

Doing it on a phone calculator means multiplying by 1.18, then dividing by two for the split, then rounding each part to two decimals, and hoping it all adds back to the total. One slipped digit and the invoice does not tally with the GSTR-1. The GST calculator does this in one step: type the amount, tap the rate chip, pick 'Within state' or 'Other state', and read the total with CGST, SGST or IGST already worked out and rounded the way the GST portal expects.

The same tax engine runs inside VyaparKit's GST invoice, quotation and purchase bill tools, where the split is decided automatically from your business state and the place of supply. Use the calculator for quick checks and the document tools when you need a PDF to send.

How to calculate GST online with VyaparKit

  1. 1

    Choose 'Add GST'

The switch at the top has two modes. Keep 'Add GST' selected when you have a price before tax and want the GST-inclusive total.

  2. 2

    Enter the amount before GST

Type the taxable value in the 'Amount (before GST)' box, for example 10,000. Decimals are fine for per-unit prices.

  3. 3

    Pick the GST rate

Tap 5%, 12%, 18% or 28% on the rate chips. For special rates such as 0.25%, 3% or 6% type the number into the custom rate box beside the chips.

  4. 4

    Set the type of supply

Choose 'Within state' if buyer and seller are in the same state (CGST + SGST) or 'Other state' for inter-state supply (IGST).

  5. 5

    Read and copy the result

The panel shows the base amount, CGST and SGST or IGST, total GST and the total with GST. Press 'Copy breakdown' to paste the line into WhatsApp or a quotation.

The formula, with a worked example

  • GST amount = Base amount × Rate ÷ 100. For ₹10,000 at 18%: 10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800.
  • Total with GST = Base amount + GST amount. ₹10,000 + ₹1,800 = ₹11,800.
  • Within the same state the tax splits equally: CGST 9% = ₹900 and SGST 9% = ₹900 on ₹10,000 at 18%.
  • To another state the whole rate is IGST: IGST 18% = ₹1,800 on ₹10,000. The total is the same ₹11,800 either way.
  • Other slabs on ₹10,000: 5% gives ₹500 tax (total ₹10,500); 12% gives ₹1,200 (total ₹11,200); 28% gives ₹2,800 (total ₹12,800).
  • Round each tax component to two decimals before adding, so that CGST + SGST equals the total tax shown on the invoice.
  • Union territories without a legislature (for example Chandigarh) charge UTGST in place of SGST at the same half rate.
  • The calculator handles the slab rate only. Compensation cess on items like aerated drinks or tobacco is added separately on top of the taxable value.

GST Calculator: frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on an amount?
Multiply the base amount by the GST rate and divide by 100. For ₹10,000 at 18% the tax is ₹1,800 and the total is ₹11,800. If the buyer is in your state the ₹1,800 is shown as CGST ₹900 and SGST ₹900; if the buyer is in another state it is shown as IGST ₹1,800.
What are the current GST rates in India?
The main slabs are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Special rates of 0.25% (rough diamonds), 1.5% and 3% (gold, silver, jewellery) and 6% apply to a few items. Rates change by council notification, so confirm the slab for your HSN or SAC code before printing invoices.
Which items are taxed at 18% GST?
18% is the most common slab. It covers most services (consulting, software, advertising, repairs), electronics such as laptops and printers, cosmetics, packaged foods like chocolates and biscuits, and many industrial goods. Check the HSN or SAC code because some products in the same category fall under 12% or 28%.
Is GST calculated on the discounted price or MRP?
GST is charged on the transaction value, which is the price after any discount shown on the invoice. If a ₹1,000 item is sold with a 10% discount, GST applies to ₹900. Discounts given after supply need a credit note and prior agreement to reduce tax.
Can I charge a custom GST rate in the calculator?
Yes. Beside the 5, 12, 18 and 28 chips there is a small rate box. Type any percentage such as 0.25, 3, 6 or 7.5 and the split updates immediately. This is useful for composition scheme checks or items under special notifications.
Does the GST calculator work for reverse charge supplies?
The tax amount is the same under reverse charge; only the person paying it changes. Use the calculator to find the tax, then mark the invoice as reverse charge and pay the amount through GSTR-3B instead of collecting it from the buyer.
