In short

A discount calculator finds the final price after a percentage discount, including a second discount applied on top of the first. VyaparKit's free discount calculator takes the original price or MRP, the discount percentage and an optional additional discount, then shows the final price, the rupees saved and the single effective discount rate.

How do double discounts work?

The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so 20% + 10% is 28% off, not 30%.

Is GST charged on the discounted price?

Yes, if the discount is shown on the invoice. GST is calculated on the value after discount.

About the discount calculator tool

Discounts are how Indian retail works: 20% off on festival sales, 'flat 10% + extra 5% on cards', scheme discounts from distributors, and negotiated cuts on B2B quotations. A double discount is not the sum of the two percentages, because the second one applies to the already reduced price. 20% then 10% is 28% off, not 30%, and the difference matters when a customer is promised one figure and billed another.

Working this out on a phone while a customer waits leads to rounding both ways and awkward corrections at the counter. Spreadsheets handle it, but few shops open Excel for a walk-in sale. The discount calculator takes the MRP, the first discount and an optional second discount, and shows the final price, the amount saved and the effective rate in one glance, so the bill and the promise match.

In VyaparKit's GST invoice and quotation tools you can apply a discount per line and an overall discount, and the GST is calculated on the discounted value as the law requires. Use the calculator for quick answers and the document tools when the customer needs a bill.

How to calculate a discount and the final price

  1. 1

    Enter the original price

In 'Original price / MRP' type the list price before any reduction, for example 2,000.

  2. 2

    Enter the main discount

In 'Discount %' type the first discount, such as 20 for 20% off.

  3. 3

Add a second discount if any

In 'Additional discount % (optional)' type an extra scheme, card or loyalty discount, such as 10. Leave it blank for a single discount.

  4. 4

    Read the final price

The large figure is the price after all discounts, with the total saving and the effective percentage shown beneath it.

  5. 5

    See the intermediate step

When a second discount is set, the breakdown shows the price after the first discount and the price after the extra discount separately.

The formula, with a worked example

  • Discount amount = Original price × Discount ÷ 100. On ₹2,000 at 20%: ₹400. Final price = ₹2,000 − ₹400 = ₹1,600.
  • Second discount applies to the reduced price, not the original: 10% of ₹1,600 = ₹160, so the final price is ₹1,440.
  • Total saving = ₹2,000 − ₹1,440 = ₹560, which is an effective discount of 560 ÷ 2,000 = 28%, not 30%.
  • Effective rate formula for two discounts: 1 − (1 − d1)(1 − d2). For 20% and 10%: 1 − 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.28 = 28%.
  • The order of the discounts does not change the result: 10% then 20% on ₹2,000 also gives ₹1,440.
  • Finding the discount from prices: Discount % = (Original − Final) ÷ Original × 100. A ₹2,000 item sold at ₹1,500 is 25% off.
  • GST is charged on the price after discount when the discount is shown on the invoice (Section 15(3) CGST Act). A ₹1,440 net price at 18% GST becomes ₹1,699.20.
  • MRP already includes GST, so a discount on MRP is on the inclusive figure; reverse-calculate the tax from the final price when recording the sale.

Who uses the discount calculator

Garment and footwear retailers

A clothing store in Ahmedabad runs 'flat 30% + extra 10% on ₹3,000 and above' during Navratri and needs the exact bill amount at the counter.

Electronics dealers with bank offers

A dealer in Chennai applies a 5% dealer discount and then a 10% bank cashback shown on the invoice, and must quote the real net price.

B2B sellers negotiating quotations

A packaging supplier in Faridabad offers 8% trade discount plus 2% for advance payment and shows the effective 9.84% on the quotation.

Online sellers pricing for sales

A D2C skincare brand sets a sale price and a coupon on top, and checks that the effective discount still leaves a margin.

Discount Calculator: frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off a price?
Multiply the price by 0.20 to get the discount and subtract it, or multiply the price by 0.80 directly. A ₹2,000 item with 20% off costs ₹1,600; the saving is ₹400. For any percentage, final price = original × (100 − discount) ÷ 100.
Is a 20% + 10% discount the same as 30% off?
No. The second discount is applied to the already reduced price. On ₹2,000, 20% off gives ₹1,600, and 10% off that gives ₹1,440, an effective 28% discount. A flat 30% would have given ₹1,400. The gap grows as the percentages get larger.
Is GST charged before or after discount?
After, as long as the discount is recorded on the invoice at the time of supply. Under Section 15(3) of the CGST Act the taxable value is the price after such discounts. For a ₹1,440 net price at 18% the GST is ₹259.20 and the invoice total is ₹1,699.20.
How do I find the discount percentage from the original and sale price?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. If a ₹2,500 item is sold at ₹1,875, the discount is (2,500 − 1,875) ÷ 2,500 × 100 = 25%. Enter the two prices into the calculator's price fields and adjust the percentage until the final price matches.
Can a shop give a discount on MRP and charge GST extra?
No. MRP is inclusive of all taxes under the Legal Metrology rules, so a discount on MRP results in a final inclusive price, and GST cannot be added on top of that. The invoice should show the discounted inclusive price with the tax portion separated out by reverse calculation.
What is a trade discount versus a cash discount?
A trade discount is given on the list price at the time of sale, for example 10% to all dealers, and is shown on the invoice so GST applies to the net value. A cash discount rewards early payment, for example 2% if paid within 7 days, and is usually settled later through a credit note or receipt.
