About the number to words (indian) tool
Indian documents state large numbers in words as well as figures: cheques, invoices, agreements, affidavits, board resolutions and tender bids. The Indian system groups digits differently from the international one, using lakh (1,00,000) and crore (1,00,00,000) rather than million and billion, so 12,34,567 is read as twelve lakh thirty-four thousand, not one million two hundred thousand. Writing these out correctly is second nature to some and a stumbling block for many.
Word converters built into Excel and Word default to the international system and produce 'one million two hundred thirty-four thousand', which looks wrong on an Indian invoice and may be questioned by a bank. Typing the words by hand invites mistakes such as a dropped 'lakh' or 'ninty'. How the Indian numbering system works, with examples
- Place values: 10 = ten, 100 = hundred, 1,000 = thousand, 1,00,000 = one lakh (100 thousand), 1,00,00,000 = one crore (10 million), 1,00,00,00,000 = one arab (1 billion, also written 100 crore).
- Comma grouping: three digits from the right, then every two. 1234567 is written 12,34,567 in India and 1,234,567 internationally.
- Worked example: 12,34,567 = 'Twelve Lakh Thirty Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty Seven'. Read the groups left to right: 12 lakh, 34 thousand, 567.
- 1,00,00,000 = 'One Crore'. 2,50,00,000 = 'Two Crore Fifty Lakh'. 15,00,000 = 'Fifteen Lakh'.
- Numbers above 99 crore are read as crore of crore or in arab: 1,50,00,00,000 = 'One Hundred Fifty Crore' (150 crore, or 1.5 arab).
- Amounts in tenders and contracts are usually written with words in brackets after the figure: ₹12,34,567 (Rupees Twelve Lakh Thirty Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty Seven Only).
- 'Lakh' and 'lac' are both used; 'lakh' is the spelling in official and legal documents. Hyphens (thirty-four) are optional and the converter omits them.
- Zero is written as 'Zero'. Negative numbers are prefixed with 'Minus'.

- How do you write 1 crore in numbers?
- One crore is 1,00,00,000 in the Indian format, which is 10,000,000 (ten million) in the international format. It has eight digits: a 1 followed by seven zeros. Ten crore is 10,00,00,000 and one hundred crore, also called one arab, is 1,00,00,00,000 or one billion.
- How many lakhs make a crore?
- One hundred lakh make one crore. Since one lakh is 1,00,000 and one crore is 1,00,00,000, dividing gives 100. So 250 lakh is 2.5 crore and 50 lakh is half a crore.
- How is 12,34,567 written in words?
- Twelve Lakh Thirty Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty Seven. Read the Indian groups from the left: 12 is the lakh group, 34 is the thousand group and 567 is the last group. In the international system the same number, 1,234,567, would be one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven.

- Excel has no built-in number-to-words function, and the SpellNumber macro Microsoft provides follows the international million-billion system. - What is the difference between the Indian and international number systems?
- Both agree up to a thousand. After that the Indian system groups in twos (lakh at five digits, crore at seven digits, arab at nine) while the international system groups in threes (million at six digits, billion at nine). One million is ten lakh, ten million is one crore and one billion is one hundred crore.
